New research indicates that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these medications should be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
